Elisabeth - Der Letzte Tanz
English: The Last Dance. Translation by youtuber OiaHavanah.
Death:
It's an old story, but new for me.
Two have the same beloved, namely you.
You've decided. I've missed you.
At your wedding I'm only.. the guest.
You've turned away, but that's just pretense.
You want to be true to him, but you invite me in.
Even in his arms, you smile at me.
And where that will lead, you know too.
The last dance, the last dance belongs solely to me.
The last dance, the last dance. I'll dance only with you!
Time is old and tired. The wine is sour.
The air is close and stuffy in the mirrored hall.
Invisible eyes see the two of us.
All wait for the rendezvous.
The last dance, the last dance belongs solely to me.
The last dance, the last dance. I'll dance only with you!
And so I wait in darkness, and look out at you.
Play the big loser, but I know I will win!
The last dance, the last dance belongs solely to me.
The last dance, the last dance. I'll dance only with you! (x2)

Viele spielten süßen Tod, doch niemand spielte wie Máté.
Das Beste ever ❤❤❤❤❤
at 1:58 it looks like he realized he had to be standing there to represent the weight of the Hapsburg throne and empire weighting him down. Idk if that's the case but it is funny to me while the symbolism still looks cool!
Team hier wegen Musik aufgabe in der Schule
Absolute Gänsehaut wo Mate singt ... ❤❤❤ ich liebe seine Stimme einfach
No N ok ok Ok I m No ok mmm I’m min p no Kim m N n N nm p
what is the name of the actor? he is amazing!
Máté Kamarás 😊
thank you so much! @@Suzy.musician
@@user-nx3si3ly4t You're welcome
When my neighbours celebrated a birthday party at midnight and were playing LOUD music for hours, I waited till they made a break around 3 a.m. Next I went out in the garden, turned on the volume on my phone and played that song. (Of course not because Death sings it 😉) From that moment on I never had any problems with nightly interruptions. No matter if they got the message or were just amazed by his voice, either way I had the last dance.
lmao, I love this!!!

no other actor matches the chaos of this scene than Máté. he makes his presence felt, and genuinely fights for Elisabeth against Franz Joseph - the Elisabeth, meine Elisabeth part gets me every time... and his vocals always throw me off the bed
Exactly! This is so intense on so many levels. Máté plays it beautifully and the choreography and staging all goes hand in hand.
In this scene he displays all of his qualities combined. In some of his other songs many pointed out, that his voice and his facial impressions/ acting weren't on the same level. And his interaction with the actress of Elisabeth was overshadowed by his interaction with the audience. Well, I have no doubt, in this scene everything came together and all those just downcasting him to his outward look and mocking his style of portraying Death because of it, might use this two minute piece too dive into it a little further than the surface. They might reconsider their opinion or find it justified, either way this scene is just brilliantly written and executed.
For all people who don't like this way of portraying death, I honestly think he (Kamaras) nailed it the most in all the years of the show. That is just the way I would think of death, like an arrogant, yet thoughtful and impulsive man, who looks young, but clearly have seen everything before accept from love. And most important I think that is the way Elisabeth sees him. He tries everything to make her succumb to his desire, he takes two of her children before their time and seems to stay untouchable in the sense of the word, till the moment she dies and she realises, he has never loved nor was he loved by anyone in all of the countless milleniums of his existence. And noone can show both sides of death like Kamaras in acting and voice: The hurt, angry and rejected side on the one hand and the soft and longing side.
You nailed it with your description. I wholeheartedly agree. He interprets the role perfectly and gives a lot of attention to every nuance and every detail. I liked his explanation where he stated that he portrays Death as a man and not as an androgynous being because, in the show, we see Death through the eyes of Elisabeth. His interpretation resonates with me the most.
@@Suzy.musicianAnd for those who don't like the costume, they forget that it's been a century after Elisabeths death. And I highly assume that death always wears what is on vogue in the recent period of time he is in, as he portrays what people yearn for the most. As he always wore an elegant suite when she was alive. Even if he really looks a lot like Elvis here, I guess for many in the 60s and 70s that was the imagination of an succesful and self confident man 💯
Unbewusste Seelenkampf
so amazing
Wow
I have been learning German and picking up words and grammar from this beautiful song.
I'd like to add a couple more suggestions for the translations: "All sins have been committed/dared" I think "gewagt" in this case is not an adjective, but the past tense. "Boundaries" instead of "bonds" Grenzen, nicht Verbindungen/Banden. Also" Because we can't stand to see suffering, we think the world's ending". "Chances used" - the German lyrics imply not that they've been actually used, but rather have been let passed by/go instead. I agree on the "noise" vs. "sounds" issue. Klänge, in this case, is a more positive word than Geräusch or Lärm. Lastly, the German lyrics mostly talk about "us", as in the Austrian people, which isn't really translated here. I think it is very indicative of the Austrian mindset.
Chancen sind verschenkt. Like, in the sense of "all chances have been used up" or "been passed up" maybe?
What do the branches on their costumes mean?
It's most likely because they have been long been dead I guess and as time progresses, So as the branches grow on them ig???
They're called "Schimmelranken" (mold tendrils) in the original costume design. So yes, they are supposed to show that these were all real people who have been dead for over a century now. Note that Death and Lucheni don't have them.
@johnrupert5606 That's interesting, thank you so much for sharing this. How did you come across this information if I may ask?

wow! they are so natural and conversational!

English translation (go easy on me of course it isn’t as good): Long ago we danced together One day we will dance forever You need me, yes, you need me. Even if you say you love him I will always rise above him Even if you truly love him He’ll sink into the night The night is growing longer It was evening when your day began The night is growing longer You can’t run from me There’s nobody who can Credit for the chorus goes to Janeyrevanescence12 Edit: one word. Edit 2: I like the original better.
It's frightening how apt this song is about everything in the modern day.
Every time that I see Der Tod drop the file and Lucheni take it, I can't help but think about the opening song and also think, "The contract is set".

It’s so funny that she had to push the Death out by herself.
Japan version is better
nah, German is the best
Mate is my favorite Death. Not only is his voice seductive and edgy, it is so powerful. And he has a wildness in his play that makes Death both dangerous and attractive.

How is Mate’s name pronounced?😍 he’s absolutely gorgeous! Not sure how Elisabeth resisted Death when he looks like that!
Not like the english word for mate 😂 It is a similiar version of Maite, but without the "i". He is hungarian, so you call the "a" not like "äh". You pronounce every letter.
It's like "Mah-teh" if that makes sense. The "Mah" as in mahogany and the "teh" as in television.
I’m a simple woman, I see Máté as Der Tod , I click😌
While I absolutely loved this production, I liked the costumes of the Dutch production with Pia so much more. The dress were opulent, quite historically accurate and the wig was just stunning. Mate is hands down my face death tho .
In love with Alan Cumming in this role!!
Alan Cummings and cast were brilliant in reinterpreting an iconic theater production.

I never understood this musical. They made a story about a real character as talking with death angel andt this whole romantic stuff with him.... Also, Elisabeth was 14 years old when she got married. I know the actors are adults but they at least would chose a younger actress for her role. This woman looks like above 40...
The death angel or actually just death is actually Elisabeth's own twisted thoughts. He never exists in real life as some hot guy in a cowboy outfit. He's rather just a presence of death coming after the empress slowly and unexpectedly. Also joke on you, Maya at that time was 39. They obviously picked her because she had an experience being one of the original Elisabeths in the original production and not because of her age. Age hardly matters at all when she can convince the audience with her outstanding performance.
Well, Elisabeth died at 60. Musical covers her life from 14 to 60. So 35-40 is a good average age for this character. Besides young actresses would not be able to provide depth to the older character. Not enough true life experience )
No, she wasn't, if you actually liked history or even a simple Google search you'll know that she was 16 not 14
the eyes! <3
